Appearance
Edward is pretty short and keeps his real height a secret (see Personality and Weaknesses). His hair is blonde and tied to a pigtail. Edward has golden eyes, just like his father from whom he also inherited the aforementioned blonde hair. He's rather thin, but weighs a lot because of his artificial limbs, his right arm and left leg, which are made of steel. Those can't be seen normally, though, as Edward wears black trousers, boots, a long, red coat with a hood and white gloves.

Under his coat he wears a black tanktop and a black jacket. From his brown belt hangs a silver chain which belongs to a pocket-watch with a lion and a star on it, the emblem of the military of Amestris. Inside the watch he carved in "Don't forget 3.Oct 11".

Personality
Edward seems rude, reckless, cocky and childish. He does what he wants, says what he wants and doesn't care what other people think of him. He tends to fight a lot with people, especially those who might have called him short, since he has issues concerning his lacking height.

After he and his brother attempted human transmutation to revive their mother, Edward placed a huge burden onto his shoulders. He deems himself responsible for the loss of his brother's body, since he was the one who created the theory of human transmutation they used and he talked his brother into it. Edward always puts his brother before himself, with his primary goal in life being the restoration of Alphonse's body, even if it may cost his own life. He even burned their House before they went on their journey, so they wouldn't return without it being done. Though, as Hohenheim once remarks, that might not be the only reason, another one being to try to get rid of the painful memories of the human transmutation they performed in that house.

He not only puts the blame on himself though, but also on his father, Van Hohenheim. His father left the family when Ed and Al where still very young and all Ed remembers is seeing him study alchemy and how he made his mother cry by going away. He never forgave his father for that and clings to the thought that, if Hohenheim hadn't left, maybe their mother wouldn't have gotten that sick or at least she could have been happier. Part of this may be true, since there's a possibility that Ed hadn't made up his mind to revive their mother.

Edward tends to push away people he cares about since he realizes the nature of the journey they're on and that there's a possibility that he might not succeed. A perfect example for that is his childhood friend and possible love interest Winry Rockbell, who often remarks how she feels that Ed is drifting away from her, not telling her about the life he is leading.

Being an alchemist, and thus a scientist, Edward doesn't believe in Gods. He's an atheist. The only thing he believes in is the principal of "Equivalent Trade" in alchemy, which says that to attain something you must first sacrifice something of equal value. While this is the basic principle for Alchemy, he adapts it to many different situations, making it kind of his philosophy.
Edward is very idealistic, he doesn't want to kill people and he regards chimeras, affixed souls and other "abnormal" entities as "human" because he does not want to admit that his brother is not. While he entered the military and became a State Alchemist to achieve his goal, Edward still believes that Alchemy is for the people and not to be used as a means for killing. All in all, despite his short (oops) temper and his childish attitude, Edward is a strong and selfless person who does his best to help the people around him.

Abilities
Ed is a genius alchemist, which means that he can transmute matter and thus can change objects into different objects. He's a genius in this field, having achieved the status of State Alchemist at the age of twelve. Since he has seen the Gate of Truth he can create a transmutation circle by putting his hands together. Because of this, he doesn't have to paint one every time he wishes to transmute something. This makes the process a lot faster.

He also is a formidable fighter, which is a result of the harsh training his teacher, Izumi Curtis, made him and his brother endure. In battle he often transmutes his Automail-Arm into a blade or something similar.

Upon coming to Manhattan he finds his powers to be severely weakened. While he is still able to use Alchemy to a certain degree (contrary to the anime, the manga never explains that alchemy wouldn't work in other worlds and there is no reason to believe this to be the case), it puts a lot of strain on him, thus preventing him from performing difficult transmuting. He can, however, still repair small, broken things. It's also still possible to transmute a blade onto his arm, but it will strain him a lot and won't last long.

Weaknesses
Since Ed has been outfitted with both an automail arm and leg, he has to bear the disadvantages that come with that. While Edward is agile and fast, this is limited by the weight of his automail, which is slightly remedied by it recently having been made lighter. Still, because of this weight, Edward cannot swim at all, thrown into deep water he's just deadweight. He also can't travel long distances in deserts without at least occasionally cooling off his steel-prosthetics with water since they heat up considerably.

Thinking of non-physical weaknesses, his temper comes to mind. Edward often snaps at words like "small", "short(y)" and the like, since he's not satisfied with his height. This might be because Ed does not like to drink milk – so much that it'd probably be possible to torture him with it – but that's just a myth people make up to get their children to drink that stuff, right?
Edward also still feels guilty for what he and his brother have done when they tried to revive their mother. Edward still blames himself for the incident and thinks that it's his fault that his brother lost his body. He tends to have nightmares centered around these feelings.
Some argue that his bad taste in art is also one of his weaknesses.
